The Lowercase transformation in Nexadata Pipelines allows you to convert text in selected columns to lowercase. This transformation is useful for standardizing text formats across a dataset, making data consistent and easier to analyze, especially when dealing with fields like department names, email addresses, or job titles.

You can configure this transformation in Natural Language Mode or Advanced Mode.

Inputs for the Lowercase Transformation

  1. Name of the Transformation: In Natural Language Mode, the transformation is automatically named, but you can rename it later using Advanced Mode. For example, you might name it "Standardize Department Names to Lowercase".

  2. Columns to Transform: Select one or more columns where you want to apply the lowercase transformation. Common choices include "Department_Name", "Email_Address", or "Job_Title".

Using Natural Language Mode

In Natural Language Mode, simply describe the transformation you want to apply, and Nexadata will automatically set it up for you. The transformation name will also be generated, but you can adjust it later in Advanced Mode if desired.

Example Instructions in Natural Language Mode

  • Convert all text in the Department_Name column to lowercase.

  • Standardize email addresses by converting all entries in the Email_Address column to lowercase.

  • Transform all Employee Position titles to lowercase.

  • Change all characters in the Job_Title column to lowercase.

  • Make the Product_Category column lowercase for consistency.

Note: If Natural Language Mode doesn’t fully capture the transformation you need, you can switch to Advanced Mode to make adjustments.

Using Advanced Mode

In Advanced Mode, you have precise control over the Lowercase transformation settings, allowing you to select specific columns and fine-tune the transformation as needed.

Steps in Advanced Mode

  1. Name of the Transformation: Provide or update the transformation name, such as "Standardize Department Names to Lowercase" or "Lowercase Job Titles".

  2. Columns to Transform: Select the columns where you want to apply the lowercase transformation, such as "Department_Name" or "Email_Address".

Advanced Mode offers a structured approach to ensure the transformation applies to exactly the columns you select.

Example Use Case

The Lowercase transformation is often used to ensure consistency in case-sensitive fields, such as email addresses. For example, in a dataset with an "Email_Address" column, you may want to convert all email entries to lowercase to standardize formatting and avoid duplicate entries due to case variations. For example:

  • Transformation Name: Lowercase Email Addresses

  • Column to Transform: Email_Address

This transformation will make all entries in the "Email_Address" column lowercase, ensuring consistent email formatting across records.

Summary

The Lowercase transformation in Nexadata Pipelines standardizes text data by converting values in selected columns to lowercase. Use Natural Language Mode for quick setup or Advanced Mode for detailed control over the transformation. This transformation is ideal for ensuring consistency in fields like department names, email addresses, or job titles.
